This control allows you to attach a GPS to your computer. Nearly any USB or RS-232 Serial GPS can be connected to your computer for this control. Simply connect the GPS to your computer and wait for it to detect the virtual COM port for the GPS. The COM port is the communication port for the GPS. Select the COM port and voila, you will begin receiving GPS information. Because adding GPS functionality is different for everyone, the GPS controls are built into EZ-Script. When creating an EZ-Script, search the available commands for GPS.
USB and Bluetooth GPS devices are actually quite simple. They all connect to the computer via a Serial Communication Port. Once the GPS locks into satellites, it will begin transmitting values. To standardize across all GPS models, the NMEA defined communication protocols. Each format of information is called a ?sentence?. A sentence begins with the configuration descriptor. The most popular sentence types are: CGA, GSA, GSV and RMC.
(Keep in mind, you will never need to understand the code that is posted above. That is a reference of what the EZ-Builder software will parse for you.)
Almost all GPS sensors are Serial TTL/Uart. That means they will communicate to the computer the same way the EZ-B does, by using a COM port. If your robot has a computer inside it, you can use a USB or Serial GPS module that wires directly to the computer. If your robot does not have a computer inside it, then you will need to have the GPS unit communicate wirelessly to your computer.
To have your GPS communicate with your computer wirelessly, this is actually very easy. Using a simple Bluetooth TTL Uart adapter, like the one found on the EZ-B, you can connect the Serial TTL connections of the GPS directly to the Bluetooth TTL Adapter. Do not use the bluetooth TTL adapter on the EZ-B, as it is already used by the EZ-B :). Instead, you will need to purchase one specifically for the GPS. You can purchase an adapter directly from our store.
To have the EZ-Builder GPS Control communicate with your GPS, simply select the COM port for it and press the START button. This will begin communication of the GPS and show you the information it receives. The EZ-Script commands will allow you to navigate your robot using the GPS values.
You can read more about the protocols from the GPS Information website by clicking here.
1) Connect the GPS TX to the Bluetooth RX
2) Connect the GPS RX to the Bluetooth TX
3) Give both devices +5 and GND (power by the EZ-B is fine)
4) Connect the device to your computer via BLUETOOTH
5) Add the GPS Control in EZ-Builder (Add Controls, Misc, GPS)
6) Select the COM port for the Bluetooth
*Note: The above instructions assume the GPS module baud rate is 9600 (Which is default for bluetooth module) - Otherwise, more configuration is necessary.
