Battery Little Puff Up- Can'T Charge

One of my EzRobot battery is dead, can't charge

Do I just throw it away in the trash?

What other battery can be used?

Oh yeah!  back when the lipos first came out for the model aviation industry, a couple guys I know from the club had either lost their car or their house due to lipo fires. I myself have some small packs for use on my smaller planes and yeah, even they can pack a punch if not careful. Can get a lil scaru if you have a pack that puffs up:)

Thanks everyone for all the information and videos.

My new batteries should be here tomorrow, I will try them out.

If they don't work, maybe Jeremie can get some and I will pay him :-)

Just a joke

I may be reading this wrong but Jeremie works with EZ Robot. I think he was just saying to buy them from EZ Robot. Sorry if my presumption of your comment is wrong. ;)

I fully understand where Jeremie is coming from and I would have said the same thing.  If you get a battery and it doesn’t fit (wrong dimensions, different connector) or worse blows up your robot (wrong voltage, connector not keyed so you reverse polarity) or even worse spontaneously combusts (internal short because of bad quality control) and you call up EZ-Robot at best you will get a I am sorry to hear that but if you use an ez-robot battery in an ex-robot it is guaranteed to work.  If it doesn’t they will support you.

Most DIY robot builders here understand voltage, polarity, JST connectors, C ratings etc but for the casual ez-robot user who visits synthiam forum, the use the manufacturer recommend battery is the way to go.

Thanks @Nink,

That's exactly right, I know the quality, dimensions, and connections of the EZ-Robot battery but I have no idea what else is out there. Most LiPo batteries these days also come with a yellow XT type connector so switching the battery connection back to Deans would be a scary process, as you could short out the battery leads with your soldering iron.

I have dealt with my fair share of puffy batteries but I have never had one catch fire or explode before. This is likely due to me taking care of the battery before anything negative happens. I know for a fact that there's no going back from a puffy battery, no matter how hard I tried to cycle charge them to bring them back. The battery chemistry is changed, oxygen fills the battery, and the capacity is quite diminished. The only thing left to do is properly dispose of the battery.

I would definitely recommend as the first course of action is to bring the puffy battery to a local recycling/disposal facility. But in the case that a place like that doesn't exist in your area, the following can be done:

When a LiPo puffs up it is best to drain it all the way down with a large power resistor (not too low in resistance - maybe 50-100ohms) or a 12V light bulb. You can even use the EZ-B itself by leaving it on to draw the voltage all the way down to nothing (it draws about 75-130mA depending on what you have attached). You don't want to drain it down too fast as it can still generate a ton of heat. Once the battery is depleted to 0V (test with a voltmeter) then you can short out the red and black leads. Then toss the battery in a ziplock and save it to bring it to a recycling/disposal facility in the town over the next time you visit.

WARNING Never ever short the battery leads unless you are 100% confident the battery is at 0V. If you short the battery wires while it has some charge left it's likely you'll witness flames and possibly an explosion.

*Edit Before you dispose of a puffy lipo, keep it stored in a flame-proof container. I use a crockpot, but there are containers and bags specifically designed for this kind of thing.
