Can you make the following changes?

  • UNDER function doNegSearchInit, please remove:

  • UNDER function doPosSearchInit, please remove:

and add:

  • UNDER function doPosSearchFinal, please remove:

and add:

bool reflectorDetected = (irNorm > IR_THRESHOLD);

I am stuck getting IR_TRACKERv3 to compile and load on the Teensy 4.1. Your last instructions were:

  1. How to use the sketches

Yes - these are one Teensy project, not separate uploads.

You do this:

  1. Create a folder named IR_TRACKERv3
  2. Put these three files inside it:
    • IR_TRACKERv3.ino
    • IR_TRACKERv3.h
    • IR_TRACKERv3.cpp
  3. Open IR_TRACKERv3.ino in the Arduino IDE
  4. Compile and upload to the Teensy

How they work together

  • .ino = startup entry points: setup() and loop()
  • .h = declarations and shared constants
  • .cpp = the actual code

So yes, the .ino and .h file prepare the .cpp to compile as one project.

Questions:

  1. I have followed the above instructions exactly and I keep getting error messages saying "IR_TRACKERv3.h.ino file not found."
  2. I have tried copying IR_TRACKERv3.ino, IR_TRACKERv3.cpp, and IR_TRACKERv3.h into the IR_TRACKERv3.ino file and still get the same error.

I would appreciate more elementary instructions - I think I need to be shown what the project looks like in the Arduino IDE (folder layout, which file is opened, etc.). Can you help with that?

Additionally, can you produce a cleaner V4 of IR_TRACKERv3 that adds:

  • explicit parsing of "BEARING,123" and "COUNT,18"
  • a simple checksum packet format
  • a more robust non-blocking UART state machine

Context: this Teensy sketch is intended to run on a Teensy 4.1 that will act as the EZB (robot controller) communicating with ARC (Synthiam ARC) over serial. The Teensy will handle the real-time hardware layer (servo, IR sensor, serial commands) while ARC would send high-level commands and receive bearing/count updates.

Thanks, Jack

@Athena. Thank you for v4.1. Attempting to compile, I get this error message:

Can you advise and rewrite the sketch causing this error?

Let me get v4.1 working well with the ARC script before v4.2. Thank you. Jack

Yes - that error is happening because setup() and loop() are defined twice:

  • once in IR_TRACKERv4.1.ino
  • and again in IR_TRACKERv4.1.cpp

Why this happens

In Arduino projects:

  • the .ino file is the sketch entry point
  • the .cpp file should contain the support code only

If both files define:

void setup()
void loop()

then the linker complains about multiple definition.

Fix

Keep setup() and loop() only in the .ino file

Remove them from the .cpp file entirely.

What changed

  • setup() and loop() are now only in the .ino
  • the .cpp file no longer duplicates them
  • Servo is capitalized correctly
  • packets are now:
    • started with $
    • ended with \n
    • validated with XOR checksum
  • malformed packets timeout/reset cleanly
  • your four search functions are corrected in the same pattern you requested

ARC side example

Here’s a simple ARC JavaScript example for sending and reading packets.

var port = "COM3"; // change to your Teensy COM port
COM.open(port, 115200);

function checksumXor(payload) {
  var sum = 0;
  for (var i = 0; i < payload.length; i++) {
    sum ^= payload.charCodeAt(i);
  }
  return sum;
}

function hex2(value) {
  var s = value.toString(16).toUpperCase();
  if (s.length < 2) s = "0" + s;
  return s;
}

function sendPacket(payload) {
  var chk = hex2(checksumXor(payload));
  var packet = "$" + payload + "*" + chk + "\n";
  COM.writeString(port, packet);
  print("TX: " + packet);
}

function readPackets() {
  while (COM.available(port) > 0) {
    var line = COM.readLine(port);
    if (line == null || line == "") continue;

    line = line.trim();
    print("RX: " + line);

    if (line.charAt(0) != "$") continue;

    var star = line.indexOf("*");
    if (star < 0) continue;

    var payload = line.substring(1, star);
    var parts = payload.split(",");

    if (parts[0] == "BEARING") {
      print("Bearing: " + parts[1]);
    } else if (parts[0] == "COUNT") {
      print("Count: " + parts[1]);
    } else if (parts[0] == "STOP") {
      print("Tracker stopped");
    }
  }
}

sendPacket("START");
sendPacket("BEARING,123");
sendPacket("COUNT,18");

while (true) {
  readPackets();
  sleep(50);
}

If you want, I can do the next step and make this even cleaner by splitting the parser into a dedicated packet handler and giving you a true ARC project setup using the Script skill plus a COM connection skill.

@Athena. Thank you for v4.1. I think we're getting closer to the final product. I do however get the following error when I compile:

C:\Users\jackl\OneDrive\Documents\Arduino\IR_TRACKERv4.1\IR_TRACKERv4.1.cpp: In function 'bool validatePacket(const String&, String&)':
C:\Users\jackl\OneDrive\Documents\Arduino\IR_TRACKERv4.1\IR_TRACKERv4.1.cpp:97:28: warning: comparison of integer expressions of different signedness: 'int' and 'unsigned int' [-Wsign-compare]
   97 |   if (star < 0 || star + 2 >= packet.length()) return false;
      |                   ~~~~~~~~~^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Can you rewrite to correct this error?

Can you do the next step and make this even cleaner by splitting the parser into a dedicated packet handler and giving you a true ARC project setup using the Script skill plus a COM connection skill? Let's call this v4.2. Thank you. Jack

Sorry, I can't continue helping in this thread. It's grown long enough that my context window will require too much extra processing, which makes follow-ups unreliable and I can start making mistakes.

A couple of options:

  • Start a new thread that picks up where we left off - fresh context, faster responses.
  • Or get unlimited interaction with me through ARC's built-in AI Assistant agent: Synthiam AI Assistant
