Update2 No go for surgery this Friday... He is FIV positive so the vets want to give him more time to get stronger before surgery... Currently they are debating whether to split the surgeries into 2.. One for neutering and a second for the dental...... Friday may possibly be just for neutering... They said one long surgery may stress him out as his immune system in a little compromised by the FIV

I really wish the little guy well, and a speedy recovery. Give him a tickle behind the ear and buy him a can of tuna from me. :)

#3

Thanks Steve... He's a tough little guy.... He sleeps and eats mostly right now... LOL... You should see him all sprawled out on his heating pad... Already thinks he owns the place...

Will keep you guys posted :)

You posted the same time I did earlier. Sorry to hear about the delay, but two visits is better than one long op. Thanks for the update.

Richard, Best wishes to "Patches". That is great you are trying to help. We are on a similar crusade with a Great Pyrenees named Shaydee. She is older, but very loving, especially with our grandkids. Steve S

Thanks Steve.... That's a nice looking dog! She looks like she would have a great disposition about her...

He sure looks comfy in your house for a barn cat.

I'm glad you started this thread. Without a direct messaging system in place to contact you directly, I was reluctant to ask for more info.

I almost tried to friend Sue in hopes for info but this is better.

#8

@Zap... (Jerry, right?)... Sue's email is suebenoit(at)yahoo (dot) ca

He's definitely a barn cat... stank like a horse barn when we first got him in the house... We since cleaned him up quite a bit... My guess is at one time he was someone's "cute" kitten that later was left to fend for himself for some reason... He's too friendly to have been completely Feral.. He is not neutered and has serious fleas and mites problems to boot...I know I have been feeding him for 4 years now... When he came to us (which he usually never does in the cold) a few nights ago, he was in seriously rough shape... Fresh wound under left is eye, cheek that looked like raw hamburger not to mention many old scars too. In my mind he was asking for our help... He had lost a lot of weight since we last saw him about a month ago... His teeth are pretty bad... 2 of the 4 k-9 are broken and according to the vet at least half the other teeth are either broken or cracked and need to be removed...

Thanks again for your help by the way, we really appreciate it...

@Steve S.

I just wanted to say that Shaydee is a beutiful looking dog. Really nice photo. Good on you.

#10

@Richard R (yes, it's Jerry)

It was just a drop in the bucket but I wanted to help some if I could.

We rescue strays and waifs around my house too, but usually it's people and not animals :)

We do have a cat (Kevin) around here so I have a soft spot for cats.

#11

Anyone else who wants to post animal rescue or other stories of their own feel free to post in this thread....

#13

My wife and I have rescued 4 cats and 2 dogs. We both have a soft spot for animals that need help. Our one cat just had 7 teeth pulled so I know too about vet bills! It's a good thing you and your girlfriend is doing:) I wish you and Patches all the best.

#14

@Ted... Thank you and thank you for your help by the way....

#15

Ok, so Patches was at the vets yesterday again.... The vet couldn't believe how well he is doing so now surgery is scheduled for this Wednesday. Both surgeries will be done at once, which is awesome news. He had gained a pound in a week, which is not surprising since he's a little piglet... His mouth is a bit of a mess so I am not sure how he can eat like that... Hunger is stronger than pain I guess... Bottom line he is doing much better and can handle a single longer surgery now...

I'll have another update after his surgery...

That's really great to hear. I had a cat a few years back who, most of the time, wouldn't chew his food and just woof it down. The dog would give him funny looks thinking "eat the plate why don't you" lol.

Anyway that's great news Richard. Best of luck for Wednesday. Thanks for the update. :)

I've been following this and I'm very happy things are going well. I truly hope they continue to.

I totally get your and others passion for getting the best medical care for your pets. They are such a special part of our families. Last year we I lost a beloved Cataholia that had been a special part of our family to a brain tumor. I dropped over 6k trying to save her and don't regret spending a single penny or writing the check each month to pay off the loans.

User-inserted image

We've since rescued sister Cataholia pups that are quickly becoming as much a part of our family as Sissy was. I guess I need to start saving up cash for their care if ever they get sick. Maybe a reserve of 12K this time?

User-inserted image

Good luck and strength to all who are caring for sick pets. They are very fortunate animals to have such caring and loving people in there lives. ;)

#19

No problem Richard.

I added a few pics of my Sissy and the two pups Belle and Sky. Hope that wasn't inappropriate.

#20

@Dave.... Not inappropriate at all... Everyone is welcome to post pics and stories of their pampered furies in this thread.... Those pups are too cute... Do you still have them?

#21

Yep, Sky and Belle are just over a year old now and will be part of the family forever. We rescued them from a Foster Home down in Texas had them flown up to Wisconsin just before last Christmas.

Thanks for asking.

They even have a Facebook page:

I've got one on major pain meds right now from a ruptured anal gland. Go back for stitches next Tue.

Ouch! Doc, do you have one of those butt pillows for her to sit on? ;)

Poor thing. That a nice looking dog!

#24

I am pleased Patches is gaining strength. Good luck with the surgery next week.

@Alan.... Thanks.... I'll keep everyone posted...

I don't really have a story to tell, just wanted to share some pictures with you all. The first one is of my best pal "Indy" (I was, and still am a huge Indiana Jones fan). I lost him a few years back due to old age. He was a big part of my life who we rescued from the RSPCA when he was just a few weeks old.

User-inserted image

The next pic is of my two cats I had at the same time as Indy. On the left was the grey Persian "Minty" which was really my mums cat. And "Toby" is on the right who was mine, and who nearly always waited for me out the front of the house when I came home from school. He was a great time keeper, and never wore a watch. And he LOVED to eat cucumber confused. Again lost both of them to old age as well.

User-inserted image

Finally my sisters dog who she rescued from a shelter who I'm lucky enough to look after when she's away. He like to eat biscuits, and my sisters socks lol. His name is "Leo" but I call him A.L.F (alien life form if you remember the TV show) :). Can you see the resemblance?

Unfortunately I can't have pets at the moment as my mum moved in with me a while back so I can help look after her due to ill health. So pets are out of the question for now as it would be to much for her. So my lil robot dog will have to suffice for now.

Anyway, hope you didn't mind me sharing my story Richard. ;)

#28

It is a very nice thing to do - (rescue animals) Thanks to all pet lovers in this thread and a really great idea (off topic of course).

#29

@Steve.... Great story Steve.... Thanks for sharing (sorry about your Mom by the way)... One day you'll probably help out another needy animal....

@Doc.... Yep, we needed an off topic, therapy type thread.....

#30

I didn't realize there are as many animal lovers on here as there are. Anybody want to adopt him?

@pacowang, Is that a real bird and are you serious? It sure is strange looking. What's the story?

#33

@Richard R, NO! You have put to much money into that guy to have him choke to death on something that ugly

@Dave S, yep it's real, called a potoo. It amazes me how the Good Lord made some of his creatures, for instance that old ugly scary guy I see every stinking morning in the mirror when I shave. Have no idea who that is but man, he is ugly.

User-inserted image

#34

@pacowang, Wow, what an amazing bird! I had no idea it even existed. I'm blown away at how it can hide in plain sight. I found this Youtube vid on it:

Do you actually have one your trying to find a home for? Sounds like their native home is down in the rain forests of Brazil.

#35

@Dave S, Nah, just saw this guy one day and lost it:) I had a drug addicted parrot but that's a whole other story :)

Kevin hopes that his Canadian brethren is doing well and comes though his surgery OK.

Thanks Jerry... I feel like singing Soft Kitty to Kevin.... :)

#38

Update on Patches.... $1700 later (worth every penny).... Surgery went well and he's recovering comfortably at home. He's our tough boy. Two upper broken canines were removed along with some root work done on at least 4 other teeth... He also had 5 missing teeth probably due to simple survival or fighting with other males. Now he can live the good life finally. We have a temporary home but are still working on finding his forever home. Patches thanks you for your help. Sorry about the upside down pic!

Great to hear it all went well. I've been following this one but so far haven't had reason to chime in since I don't have any pets (to my disappointment - it wouldn't be fair on them since I'd have to often leave them home alone).

#40

Thanks Rich... If you did get a cat he could entertain Melvin and give Jarvis a few fits....:P He is pretty looped on pain meds... He is so used to not having much food he scarfed down half a can of Friskies just now in spite of the pain he must be feeling in his mouth... He's tough and a really affectionate little cat...

#41

@Richard.

That has just made my day to hear that. I was just going to bed and thought I'd have a quick forum look before I did, and saw "Patches plight" had been updated. He certainly is a strong ol fella that's for sure. Again, I'm SOOO happy to hear the surgery went well, and I wish him a speedy recovery.

Thanks for the update mate. I'm really pleased for Sue and yourself. :D

#43

@Richard R Good to hear Patches is fine. I also had expensive surgery done on my buddy tabby cat called boba fett...he was my bud for 14 years...he passed on 2 years ago. He was also a stray, just like my 2 other pets Dirty Sanchez (chihuahua/pomeranian) and Lothar (american shorthair cat)

@pacowang I feel you man! Do what I do, Don't shave and brush your hair in the dark... :D

#44

@Richard

I am glad to hear he came through OK. He certainly is a tough little guy,

#45

Thanks everyone.... Just given him more pain meds so he should be all out of it for a while.... :)

TRUE STORY:

Once there was a farm at the edge of town. There where Silos at the farm. In one of the Silos there was a cat that lived eating the mice from the grain storage bin. He had an easy life except for a dog that lived there. Every day at the same time the dog would harass and chase the cat. I would frequent the farm on many occasions. It seemed on the outside like the cat and dog were simply playing a game. Then one day, tragedy struck. The cat got ran over by an 18 wheeler. The owner rushed the cat to a hospital and a few days later, the cat came back and was on the scene. It really looked BAD. It was partially shaven about 30% of it's body and had Stitches all over, maybe a hundred of them.
Anyway, the cat was standing there and the dog came at his usual time to harass and play with the cat. The second the dog came within the boundary of the cat, THAT CAT LIKED TO HAVE KILLED THAT DOG! He opened up a can of Beat-em-UP.

I was there and was a witness. I don't think that bully dog will go NEAR that cat again.

I LOVE dogs! and you could say I am a DOG person. But, Cats really live up to their nine lives saying. CATS ARE Tough!

:)

She love my desk:) . More of a dog person, but my daughter cat.

#48

Any day I am working from home or otherwise spending time at my desk, my cat also sits on the desk. Often with her head resting on my mouse hand. Looks a lot like yours too.

She also loves Roli ever since I mounted a laser diode next to the camera. She comes running and cries hello every time I power it up (and she hardly ever talks otherwise) and she often sleeps on the floor in front of it.

I have a cat named Lilac. I don't have any pics at the moment, but I will soon! These are some cute pets! They're all so cute!

@PJ_Dtechy She's purrrfect... LOL... Patches usually sits in my lap while I am at the computer.... I can't get anything do these days... LOL

Here are a couple of picture of our Yukiko (Snow Girl in Japanese, we brought her home on the evening before the largest mid-Atlantic snowstorm in decades a few years ago).

A few months after we brought her home I was in the attic fixing the exhaust fan and my foot slipped off the joist and I fell through the ceiling of the bathroom below. By the time I had cleaned up the mess, she managed to eat a piece of drywall and wound up with an intestinal blockage. $1500 of surgery later, and she is just fine.....
