Thoughts And Insight Into Sleeping.

Normally I have only considered milliseconds in the past when working with database systems, i.e. software to software processes. So I am a little perplexed on how you guys/gals determine how long to sleep when calling sequences of servos, motors, sensors etc. Is this some kinda guesstimate game or does anyone have a precise method for gauging time between hardware calls?
