I got my EZ-Bot last week and this weekend I started with my first project. I got myself a nice Caterpillar toy:

And, as far as I can tell from other posts here, in good EZ-Bot tradition, started to disassemble it right away.

After just slight problems with dremeling, I cut a hole in the bottom for the continuous servos that will drive the treads. I couldn't believe how close the servos fit in there.

Hotglue the servo horn to the driven wheels

A hole for the cables into the cabin and we're good to go!

Next step: Give it sonar. Thanks to the very cool Ping Radar control, that was a piece of cake

So in just two days (well actually a lot less than two days, because I didn't work full-time on it) I got this result:

Isn't that cool! In just a day or 2 you turned a toy into an obstacle avoiding robot! :)

#4

Very nice modification, very clever. I was actually thinking about the same kind of project, only I wouldn't use the body. I would replace it with a project box and mount all the internals inside it. I'd just use the tracks/mechinism as a base and mount a robot "body" on top of the project box. You have inspired me. Great stuff!

Excellent Idea! Great project!

Wow, thanks guys:) I'm now thinking, if I can get the shovel to move as well, but the mechanics for that are quite complex and I'm not sure, if I can get the servo, where it needs to go to lift the shovel. Well, the next weekend is just a few days away. We'll see :)

I like it

Perhaps you could use a linear actuator for the bucket something like this

#8

@winstn: That actuator looks real cool, but 40 pound is not quite cheap ... But I keep it in mind, if I got some money to burn :D

I really like what you have done - a robot can take the form of just about anything. I've been experimenting with tread systems for "Bob" who weighs about a Kilo. I'm looking out for a larger toy similar to yours to utilise the tread system.

Thanks :)

I looked it up and it seems "Bruder" (the company that made that bulldozer) has a branch in Australia: www.zimbler.com.au

Good luck with your project!

(For our english speaking friends: we have slight problems with the voice control ...)

I hope you get snow in your area. If its not too deep you could get the little guy to plow the walkway ;)

Thanks Josh! I have a great commercial idea! I am thinking a pooper scooper ,something like a roomba except call it a Pile-E...(semi serious);) anyone know of an organic sniffer/sensor?

#17

Not organic but I kicked around the idea of a pooper scooper robot. And there where three ideas. Number one make the bot like the color brown , two give him a heat sensor because fresh poop is in the high 80s in farenhiet and 3rd a methane sensor. Poop gives off methane for hours after a dog poops. So if it stinks your bot could "sniff it" lol - Josh S

#18

:D You guys are hilarious. Where would the Pooper Scooper dump its found treasures?

#19

Josh ..awesome solution:) ..peter! in a garbage bag layed on its side with a semicircle hoop holding it open! ps I want royalties :)

(for our english friends, we still have problems with the voice control and no real idea what the problem might be)

#22

@peterfrisch training, training and training plus a headset mic really really helps! My VR is at 94 percent consistently!

Sorry, we go off the forum for the german discussion.

As a short summary: Sven and me both have problems with the voice control. The commands are just not recognized. Sven thought it might be because of his german win 7, but I use an english one, so that's probably not the reason. On the other hand: I got very few commands through to my bot, while none of Svens were recognized. So in my case it might just have been a bad microphone, where in Svens case it seems to be a more fundamental problem.
