Newbie Questions

Hello, I have been contemplating for awhile getting an EZ-robot DIY kit for awhile, and will bite the bullet once the new version starts shipping.

I had a few questions...

-After initial programming via ARC, is a laptop needed nearby for operation of basic functions like servo's moving (or walking)? Or is everything placed onto the board of the robot?

-If the laptop is not needed, is it possible to connect an MP3 trigger and speaker that automatically plays something when say a certain servo moves (i.e. robot detects robot, moves arm, makes sound)

You need either a windows computer nearby, or for somewhat more limited functionality, and Android phone or tablet, or soon an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. (Android in Beta, but by limited functionality I mean things like voice recognition not currently supported).

The EZ-B does not store the program on board like an Arduino, but takes advantage of all the capability of your computer by remaining in contact with it.

Several of us are building robots with small on-board windows computers, like the Acer w3 tablet, netbooks, or mini-itx 12v computers.

A Windows 7 or newer PC or ios/android tablet/phone is required to run the project.

The Android/iOS versions are still under development and still pretty new so not all functions are available. A PC is still required to make the project in all cases.

You also don't need an mp3 trigger... The EZB4 has an onboard speaker....

also, near buy just means able to connect via IP. If you are good with networking, this would mean that the robot and computer could be anywhere in the world as long as both are connected to the internet.

@Brandon. What project do you have in mind , maybe we can better help you that way:)

Project wise I am contemplating a spider type robot. I have an old dell mini laptop I can most likely take apart and mount on the robot. Does anyone know how much 'weight' can be handled by these servos?

The kit servos produce something like 208oz/in torque... The 529 oz/in stated in the specs is a typo... 15kg/cm works out to 208oz/in.... Hard to quantify how much weight they will lift... Depends on many factors... length of arms/legs, number of servos, robot overall weight and design, etc... .... Also, you don't need to have the actual PC on the robot... The EZB controller communicates with your PC over wifi so it can be separate from you pc as long as it is within your wifi network range....
