I am new to EZ-B v4. The on-line guide calls for hooking up the EZ-B v4 base to 6 1.5 volt batteries. Can't I just attach it to a 9 volt AC-DC power supply?

Amps.... Any "Wall Wart" style power supply will not have the amps needed to handle the in-rush current of servos. NiMH (available as rechargeable AA), SLA and an LiPo batteries do, as do some very expensive bench power supplies.

Makes sense. I'll be building an independent static robot that will be on all day and need constant power. Do builders doing this typically power it from the EZ-B v4 base and just make sure they have enough amperage going in?
Yes, depending on what you are connecting to the EZ-B. With Servos, that is the way to do it. With motors and H-bridges, you will probably want an independent power line going to the motor controller and the EZ-B so you are not driving too much power through the EZ-B (depends again on voltage and amperage requirements though).
