Great Idea Or Not?

i was thinking of a bag with all white parts in like the brackets and end parts, head body feets.so that you can paint your own robot,in color that you want.

When you said "bag" and "paint" my first though was "Shake'N Bake", which would probably be bad for painting, so I'm glad that was not your idea! ;)

Did you have to prep the plastic before painting by doing any sanding to help the paint stick? I try to find a plastic spray paint and primer all in one and have good luck with it. But that craft spray looks pretty good Patrick!

Looks good Patrick!

When I made darth Vader, I first prepped the plastic with an etching primer. A very light coat of the etching primer before the paint. It seemed to hold up well.

here's the video for painting.aldo the parts are dry in about 20 to 30 minutes, it would be good to let it harden for a day or so.you can assemble and calibrate the, robot after 30 minutes.try not to overpaint the parts.the drying proces can be hard.

Hey @Nomad, Very cool. One of my's JD is slowly morphing into a mix of purchased and 3D printed Parts so this a great way to bring them all back to look the same.

JD is a great robot and I like the idea of giving him a makeover. Adding pieces like the JD backback that @JustinRatliff design that you printed to hide some of the wires is great. https://synthiam.com/Community/Questions/9352&page=6 and also having servo covers that hide the wires all painted the same color would also be good. (Did anyone ever create any servo/wire covers)?

#11

Your paint ideas for JD look great. You can make servo wire spiral wraps from drinking straws of any color. Use a kids handheld pencil sharperner. Just crank the straw through and that's it.

Hi rb550f

i understand what you are saying.i saw that on tv. good tip thanks.

@rb550f I was thinking more of covers that hide the servos and wires etc and improve the overall aesthetics of the robot. A bit like NAO or even XLR-One or the Altair. Although not to replace the robot just add covers to the robots servos and wires. This probably involves removing the existing PVC plastic components on the servos and replacing them with 3D printed components that are round smooth and customized for each servo depending on the location on JD.

Today the focus on EZ-Robot is more about functionality and component interchangeability (and JD does this very well) versus a standalone polished clean finished single use robot. Probably not viable from a commercial standpoint but for geeks 3D printing their own covers would fantastic.

Could we make JD look more like this with the addition of 3D printed covers ?

Hey @Nomad, those pieces look great. Something i learned while painting darth vader, is about the paint drying. To really know when paint is actually dry is by smelling it. If the paint has a scent, its not dry. it'll not smell when it's dry

here is a red jd robot.painted with the motip .there are 3 difficult colors, from this brand, and that is the red/yellow/green. just by accident i stumbled on these two colors together. also there is a way to paint the the eyes.it looks a little horror to do so. just dril them out from the backside.paint the head.and then in the link, below you find the transparent white disk from 32 mm to cover the, eyes back.they look just desame.glu whit super glu two tiny drops, the disk in place.

here the video red jd
