My favorite Sci-Fi flick has to be A.I. Artificial Intelligence. I really enjoy it because it seems like a plausible future for intelligent robots. The interactions between David, Teddy, and Gigolo Joe are intriguing and curious as these rogue robots search to find purpose as they execute their own free-will. To me it feels like building a small boat and watching it float down a bubbling stream. You just sit and watch this artificial creation as it navigates through different paths and obstacles and you just enjoy watching where it goes on it's own until it drifts from sight.
I'll say Interstellar for the sole purpose of grinding DJ's gears! He hates that movie!
Is a great movie production. It's a roller coaster a lot of Physical concepts, emotions, drama, action, thriller all condensed. I felt a little nauseous after.
@Toymaker Cool! I will definitely have to check that movie out!
@Nomad 6R Which Star Trek Movie? #1?
@ptp Well Said!
Whenever I think "favorite" it almost always ends up being a childhood movie- by virtue of number of watches if nothing else...otherwise my favorite seems to change based on mood.
So I guess if I go by that criteria- "Batteries Not Included" , "Akira", or "Spaceballs"- which I have probably seen more times than any of the Star Wars movies
But seriously! How cute were the babies! eekeekeekeek
"Favorite" and "most influential" would be how i would describe my choices. The film that impacted me as a kid was Forbidden Planet. The story was amazing and the effects were killer for the time...and there was Robbie the robot.
But most influential was Star Wars the New Hope. I saw it at the drive ins at 13 and it created a path that pushed me towards film and make up effects.
I loved all the sci fi films like Silent Running, 2001, Blade Runner, Alien.
the first movie I ever saw and with my Father was this island earth, the most influential was forbidden planet with Robbie the robot. I have always been a Dr.Who fan from episode one and my favourite robot from a child was Dr.Who's Dog robot K9.
If I had to choose just One SciFi movie, it would be A.I. by Steven Spielberg.
The adoptive family, and individual characters, all faced unique challenges in a futuristic world. 5/5
My wife and I were the only ones in the theater for the early afternoon showing.
I was also very taken in by "2001: A Space Odyssey", Robby the Robot, and Star Trek "First Contact".
I love sci-fi... my favourite is always changing. Gattaca remains a favourite, as well as The Martian. Right now I'm still loving Jupiter Ascending. It crosses into fantasy, and was highly underrated, in my opinion.
So many to choose from, and so many many really bad ones too. Forbidden Planet and the Day the Earth Stood Still are both great movies featuring robots prominently, and of course Wall-E and Iron Giant.
The Martian is probably the best over-all hard SciFi ever done, but Star Trek II, The Wrath of Khan holds a special place for me. I saw it with about 2000 other SciFi junkies at the World Science Fiction Convention in Baltimore in 1983. The roar of the crowd when Kirk realized that Khan was navigating in 2 dimensions instead of 3 was unbelievable.
I think there have been several TV series that are better than any SciFi movie. Babylon 5 is my all time favorite until now that The Expanse is on, and it has surpassed it for me. I also felt the Battlestar Galactica remake, and Firefly were absolutely top notch.
I have so many favorites...couldn't pick just one....
First one that made a huge impression on me was "Forbidden Planet" with Robby the Robot. Based on Shakespeare's "The Tempest". It is a 1956 classic. Way ahead of its time for special effects. Cool flying saucer, Robby the Robot, and an incredible monster! The robot costume cost MGM $125,000 dollars to create (equivalent to about $1.1 million today)! That was a phenomenal amount for 1956.
Score 5 out of 5
The music was creepy too! The music was created with a Theremin.
Check out this video if you have never heard Theremin music before. It's all done by just how you hold and wave your hands near the antennas.
Do TV shows count? Would have to say "Lost in Space", the original TV series (1965-1968), had a big influence on me just because of the B9 Robot. This was the one that got me into robotics. (Shout out to Dave Schulpius)
Score 5 out of 5 but just for the robot.
"Silent Running" (1972 film) was really cool. Loved the robots! Made me sad at the end...
Did you notice he was driving the ship with an Oscilloscope! LOL! And they thought we weren't paying attention.
Score 5 out of 5
"Star Wars" the original 1977 film. Blew me completely away with its special effects and robots! Score 5 out of 5. (seeing a pattern yet?)
Funny story: My dad took us to see Star Wars in his 1949 Ford Coupe! Here is a picture of one I found online. (Couldn't find the picture of his darn it) stress
"Bicentennial Man" was an incredible performance by Robin Williams. The story was very moving. Story of a robot on a journey to become human. A truly awesome movie.
Score 5 out of 5.
There are many more but, these are the ones I highly recommend that you watch when you get the chance....
Shouting right back at ya old friend. Forbidden Planet holds a place in my heart for sure, Robby was my first robot love even though he scared the heck out of me as a kid. I carried this fear over to women as I found out they were not boys. Like Robby they are strong, mysterious, and dangerous. This didn't stop me from.............. Sorry, I digress.
Actually Robby and the Lost in Space B9 Robot were designed by the same guy; Robert Kinoshita. He also designed Tobor the Great from the 1957 television pilot Here Comes Tobor.
For scifi without robots, I agree with Alan - to me, one of the best scifi shows ever was Firefly! I have been watching it again and just love everything about this show.
Score 5 out of 5
Favorite science fiction is "Star Trek", all series and all movie and of course Data is a huge inspiration for me.
But "Short Circuit", Johnny 5 for me when I was a child that whole movie was the best. It had a positive vibe that one day a robot like that could be created.
I also really like the "Terminator" saga especially "Terminator 2".
I also appreciate the epic evil genius of Luther in "Runaway". The plot was he was making evil control chips to place in robots....it really made no sense, but somehow it was AWESOME until his exploding spider bots turned on him! (I hate when that happens!)
Silent Running thanks to the amazing robots Dewey, Huey and Louie!
Score 5 out of 5!

I'll say Interstellar for the sole purpose of grinding DJ's gears! He hates that movie!
Jokes aside, I've always been a huge The Fifth Element fan. There are some flaws with the flick, but a solid 4/5 in my books
I hope I don't steal @DJ's

*Edit: Forgot to add eek eek eek eek eek
star trek 5 out 5.it was the only one i could see at that time.
My favorite Sci-Fi is "2001: A Space Odyssey".
The Battle between AI/Man
The Centripetal Motion / Simulated Gravity
The Journey/ quest for answers
@Toymaker Cool! I will definitely have to check that movie out!

Hahaha - oh geez, Alan... I somehow expected that
Jeremie is right, i would have picked A.I.... IF that was indeed my favorite sci-fi movie
I'm guessing we have to select a sci fi movie with a robot? If that's the case... hmmm, can i get back to you?
the first movie I ever saw and with my Father was this island earth, the most influential was forbidden planet with Robbie the robot. I have always been a Dr.Who fan from episode one and my favourite robot from a child was Dr.Who's Dog robot K9.
ORobot is my favorite Sci-Fi because it predicted what is closer to what robotics are become, for our current future.

@JustinRatliff Oh Yeah! Short Circuit was so awesome!
So Epic.
@Joblo What is your fav?
