Upgrading Firmware

Hi All -

I'm hoping someone can help me out. I'm trying to update the firmware on my new e-z robot. I watched and read through the "getting started" tutorials, and I've searched existing forum posts but can't seem to solve my problem.

Details are:

  1. I originally tried to connect to my home pc (xp sp3) with a Bluetooth usb adapter that I purchased separately. I already had the 3rd party device driver installed, so I uninstalled it. But the adapter is no longer recognized. After trouble-shooting how to use the Microsoft Bluetooth software instead, I hit a dead-end. I just couldn't get it to work. So I thought I'd try something else ...

  2. Plan B: I tried to connect with my work pc (win 7 sp1). The Bluetooth adapter was immediately recognized - no need for 3rd party software (great!). My Bluetooth screens match the tutorial's exactly (so I figure must be using the native Microsoft Bluetooth software), and I successfully completed all the steps in the Bluetooth tutorial section. So then I went to update the firmware. I pointed it to COM4 (I confirmed in the Bluetooth properties that this is the port it's using), and it connected (yay!). Then I went to "update" and now it can no longer connect to the device. (See details below). I unplugged it / plugged it back in a couple times with the same results. I even tried the other ports for the heck of it - no luck.

Does any one have any suggestions? I don't know what to try now ... And I really want to play with my new robot.

Many thanks,

Christie

Something strange....I do NOT have Microsoft Bluetooth Stack(as far as I know) but did have 3rd party software. I had deleted those 3rd partys and spent all day trying to "reload" MS Bluetooth stack with no joy. I started EZ-B firmware update. It showed 6 ports to try to connect to 14,16,17,3,5,7. 14 failed16 failed and 17 connected!?. I proceeded with its first "update"(new board) failing 4 times with " sending ping sending ping sending bootloader Failed to load bootloader! ....Crazy?!? on the fifth time it began to UPLOAD! and now the board has a slow blink as per the tutorials....I did not have any of the Bluetooth screens shown? or Bluetooth Icon.....Determination and perseverance.

The BT Stack on the PC I originally used when I first got my EZB, and the one I used for the firmware update wasn't MS stack it was a 3rd party, it's not that 3rd party stacks wont work, it's that the MS stack is the only one which is stable and tested with the EZB.

Have you tried updating the firmware after a reboot of the PC? Sometimes a reboot can cure the most complex of problems for no reason at all.

You may need to power cycle the EZB also, I've had it a few times when using ARC that the board will need a power cycle (I've put that down to brownouts).

Check battery is charged and is giving enough power, when I upgraded the firmware on mine I had it connected to an 12v AC supply from an old DVD player or something.

If you still run in to problems, on the Windows 7 PC there is an application called Problem Step Recorder (search for it in the start menu), it records what you are doing so we can all see exactly what's going on. Start PSR without anything else open then start going about the firmware update process and it'll produce a .zip file with a html report and screen grabs which may shine some light on it.

Thanks so much Rich always a piller of support for the EZ community!:) My BT stack is missing?! I know understand what unstable is! The EZ board has taken a firmware upgrade(whew) and time will tell if the connect script will stay connected! Ultimately if I could download the Micro Soft Bluetooth stack, that would be the most desirable:) I had taken your advise and gone thru those procedures...understandably, keeping it simple is a sound practise!
