Introduction Of Myself And Robie

Hi, I've been stalking the forums for a while, finally picked up my Robie Sr yesterday. I replaced the battery (date code of 1993) and he worked, the wheels need a bit of help and he needs a good peroxide cleaning, but over all a pretty solid starting point.

I remember being about 10 years old when I saw my first omnibot and I've wanted one ever since. My plan is to make it make it fairly autonomous, I would like it to be able to be voice controlled and be able to answer questions and play music. I have an 8yo and 5yo, so basically just a robot friend for them.

My question to the group, should I just buy the developer kit, I don't know if I have a use for the 360 servos, or to buy the individual pieces seperately. Is the hbridge in the ezrobot store strong enough for Robie's stock motors?

Thanks for any advise and insight.

Here is a picture of my daughter driving her drinks around, I'm not sure who is more excited, 10 year old me, or her.

Hey! Operational Robbie? very cool - and welcome to the forum!

  • The HBridge is more than enough for the stock motors

  • The developer kit does give you 3 HDD servos, but you're right - the continuous rotation are unnecessary for this build

I have a Robbie SR and JR sitting next to each other in my office... waiting for a similar treatment!

Hi there DJ, can you do a video on the Dynamixel plugins like did for the other servos on YouTube please. My BFA show is coming up soon, and I need to show of my robot ok, thank you Mike. Oh yeah, nice job on her robot as well.

Hi @Jerseylance. Not very good forum etiquette there jumping in off topic, over someone's "Hi I'm New" post who is trying to show something they are proud of and asking for a favor from DJ. Bad form my friend. Especially since you asked in other threads already. Good luck on getting DJ to do this for you now. eyeroll

Nice work nerdydad. Your little one really is smiling over it. Makes my heart glad. Welcome to our little dysfunctional family. :D

Good luck on your omnibot transformation @nerdydad. I am wondering if you could use the 360 servos in place of the hbridge to move the omnibot since the existing wheels need an overhaul. I built a nice little car out of 2 360 servos and it seemed to power along quite nicely. Not sure if it could move an omnibot but maybe worth trying.

Hey @DJ I am struggling to believe you spend a lot of time in that in office (Maybe the occasional meeting) but I expected to see a soldering iron on the desk, lots of electronics piled up and a stack of books in the corner. That office is pristine.

Thanks everyone. I started disassembling his head today, the back shell was already cracked, I set it down, and it split in two. It has definitely been taken apart more than once in the past. I'm trying to figure out the best way for him to turn his head and look up and down. I think for the turning part I'll either use a small lazy Susan bearing, or print something that will hold a standard large bearing.

Are the servos in the developer kit strong enough for the shoulders? I may leave the Elbows as they are, a little less control, but the current movement is correct for probably 75 to 80 percent of the uses I can think of for his arms.

It's about to get real. I guess now begins the slow methodical phase of the project.
