Connecting Dc Motor

I'm wondering if I can connect the DC motor that came along with Radioshack Robie Robot directly to the Digital Output of the EZ-B Controller. It has a capacitor (0.047uF) connected parallel to the motor. Trying to re-use this motor for movement to avoid drilling the toy. Or will i need to get a motor Controller IC (Like L293D) to protect from any back EMF that might burn the EZ-B Controller?

You will need a motor controller. DJ has one in the EZ-B store. There are tutorials on how to hook it up in the tutorials section. Also, there has been discusion on the forums too so you can search for those for additional info. Good luck to you and your build. Looking forward to seeing it!

Thanks Glickclik. Got the tutorial link. Wasn't lucky the first time when I searched for "Motor Shield" in the forum. :D

Also search for "H-Bridge" and "DC motor". Let us know if you need more info.

Just got my H-bridge today. As mentioned, the motor that came with Robie Robot had 0.047uF Capacitor and miniature dc light bulb (not an LED) connected in parallel to the motor. I still want the bulb to light-up when the robot moves. Which one is a better option:

  1. Keeping everything intact and driving the motor via H-bridge
  2. Capacitor removed and the H-bridge driving/powering both (motor and bulb)
  3. Capacitor removed and H-bridge driving the motor. Bulb is connected to another port of EZ-B controller. (Script to take care of the bulb-motor sync)

Just a safety check before I blow up something :D

Hi Im new to this type of controller I build 24volt machines. How can I step it up to 24 volt 20 watt motors from a wheelchair? thanks

Option 1. You're not going to blow anything up. You're still using the same voltage just controlling it differently.
