Using A Computer Mouse As An Encoder

Anyone heard of doing this before? I found this link talking about hacking a computer mouse to use as a cheap encoder for position indication. This might come in handy.

fairly simple to make a encoder, just need the optical switch ,few parts and a gate
to make it 2 channel quadrature encoder ,you set them at 90 deg angle
hard part on optical encoders is the slotted encoder wheel witch can be taken from any mouse

i am working on magnetic 2 channel quadrature encoder ,using hall-effect sensors
