on object and bumpers for robot to get a very good distance from sonar or IR,most read from like 3cm to 80cm its only a example but problem is the nearest reading will be off to make it from from 0 to the farthest detection ,set the sensor back on the robot if 3cm then thats the distance to set it back can do it in software as a offset
another item if your sensor doesnt have a stable reading try 1-10 mfd on the v+ pin on the sensor board,it does need to be one the pcb for it to work well dont want to go to high or to low of a value
another tip for using IR sensors if you place it horiz it will have the widest detection if placed vertical is good for edges and small objects like rods or legs
to narrow the beam pattern on sonars to detect small objects use a paper tube line with sound asborbing material placed on transmitting sonar
Hi robotmaker
your tip of using IR sensors vertical is just what i need . Because my robot is so wide it going to need a really good doorway nav sensor setup.
You have given me alot to think of , but i have a start point now CHEERS.

here is a few other ideas on using SONARS and IR'S when mounting sonars on a robot keep it away from sofa's ,foam, cloth, and carpet it will give bad readings, mostly mount the very high as you can
on mounting IR;S glass, sunlight and other items give you bad reading IR'S great for cliff detectors ,that main reason on IROBOT ROOMBA/CREATE uses them and NEATO XV-11 robotic vacuum cleaners use them too when i have time, will post much much info on all types of sensors,i have almost any sensor made and it one of my main job at work to test sensors, few we use is gas detection, IR ,sonar for depth sensor ,freon leak detector sensors, strain gauges for scales, bubble flow sensor, hall effects sensor and some very special sensors, but at home i have many many more different types
Hi Robotmaker
I picked up 6 IR sensors and 4 sonar sensors from a old convayor system , They are 24v sensors and seem to work ok . I like the IRs they have a range adjuster screw and work from 2 to 36 inch's on most types of surface , Has you say they have to be alot closer to some surfaces to switch the output terminal high. The sofa is a no no but overall i think they will work .
Thanks again.

when buying sonars here is a good test board to check them when they come from china it works only on 5 volts 4.8 to 5.6 volts sonar tester with hc-sr04 sonar
How do you use this board to test the sensor?
can use any type of sonar sensor ,some might take a small wire mod like maxsonar then all you need is a ruler with a material in front of it if you have a optical bench even better.dinstane is measured from sonar grille to object also if the number moves around a lot then sensor is unstable to start test use 5 volts switch on and hit reset blue button is power, black button is reset
So i don't need to write any kind of program? cause im not a programmer.
programmed already built-in,need to convert to feet only ,or most sonars are in meters
