You need a "backpack" for the LCD. This is what drives the LCD display and tells it what to display/translates the commands.
You have a few options.
Buy an LCD with backpack already fitted, one I recommend is the Devantech LCD05
Buy a backpack and fit it yourself, again you can find the LCD05 backpacks but robotelectronics.co.uk sell them in bulk only.
Either way, make sure it's either serial or I2C and make sure you get very clear and adequate datasheets which explain clearly the commands required (this is why I recommend the Devantech LCD05).

Avoid cheap ones from ebay, chances are there will be no instructions and will be pretty much useless.
