I click the "Open" tab and choose the JD robot. I am prompted to "Sync 3D Bit Library". Once I click "sync", I get an error message saying "Error downloading from Synthiam: The operation has timed out". What might cause this issue and what are some possible solutions to fix the error?

Ensure you have an internet connection. The files are on the Synthiam cloud server, which requires an internet connection. Do not connect to your JD robot until after you have downloaded the files, or install a second wifi usb adapter to your laptop to maintain a wifi connectin to the internet, and another to the JD.
Adding to what DJ had mentioned, there is an excellent tutorial on EZ-Robot's website for getting started with their products. Here's the link that will help get you up and running and address other questions you may have: www.ez-robot.com/learn-robotics-getting-started-humanoid-robot-kit.html
Thanks, I was not connected to the JD yet, only my home network. I am using a school district issued laptop (PC), could our firewall be blocking the download? Has this been an issue for others? If so, what specifically should I send IT to whitelist or allow these downloads?
This has not been an issue for others that I have seen. However, your school's internet will be configured differently than the rest of the world's schools, so it's difficult to say. It may be a block on the laptop itself, or the network, or your user account within the schools network. If you are receiving an error that the servers cannot be reached but you are connected to the internet, I would have to direct you to your IT department.
The server they need to allow is https://admin.synthiam.com
Hey you can try this to see if the website is blocked: admin.synthiam.com/WS/WhereAmIV2.aspx
you should see some numbers. If you see the numbers, that means it should work. If you get an error, that means it's blocked
It seems like the issue might indeed be related to your school's network restrictions or firewall settings. Since you've confirmed that you're connected to the internet but still facing issues with syncing the 3D Bit Library for your JD Humanoid robot, it's likely that the firewall or network settings are preventing the download from Synthiam's servers.
To address this, you should contact your school's IT department and inform them about the issue. You can request them to whitelist or allow the following URL: https://admin.synthiam.com. This is the server from which the 3D Bit Library and other necessary files are downloaded. By ensuring that this URL is not blocked by the firewall or network settings, you should be able to successfully sync and download the required files for your JD Humanoid robot.
Make sure to explain to the IT department that this URL is essential for educational purposes and is required for the operation of the JD Humanoid robot, which is part of your learning and development activities. They should be able to make the necessary adjustments to allow access to this URL.
