Win 10 Performance Tips Needs Updating - Fully Disabling Win 10 Updates

I have a couple suggestions for fixes and additions to your tutorials on windows performance tips and running a robot headless.

First, In your tutorial Headless SBC (Single Board Computer) https://synthiam.com/Support/Tips-to-Make-a-Robot/headless-robot-sbc you have a link called "Windows 10 Performance Tips". That link does not take you to the Windows 10 Storage & Performance Tips page. It goes to an unrelated programing page. This is the correct link: https://synthiam.com/Support/Tips-to-Make-a-Robot/free-space-with-windows-10

Secondly, In the Windows 10 Storage & Performance Tips you mention that Windows Updates should be disabled. You state that:

Quote:

"The robot computer doesn't need unplanned updates or waste valuable HD space with the enormous downloads required for updates".
You also correctly state that Windows reenables it's update function automatically even after making the setting changes you suggest to shut down this service. When Win 10 restarts the update service in a robot with a SBC board running headless, it's a true pain in the butt. Everything stops until it's complete and the computer reboots (sometimes several times. UGH). After researching this annoying behavior I found that there are ways to permanently shut down Win 10 Updates. You show a few methods in your tutorial but like mentioned above, Windows overrides the changes and resets your suggested settings.

I'll add a link to a couple articles I found that describes a few methods on how to manually shut down this windows service permanently. I'll also give you all a link to a free program I found called Windows Update Blocker that is suppose to turn off and keep this service shut down. I've done the manual method and plan to also try the free program. I have yet to see if any of this actually stopes the Update Service from reenabling but I haven't had any updates happen. I guess time will tell.

Note, One method mentioned is to place a batch file on your desktop and run it each time Win reenabled the Update service. If you are running headless with a SBC, this does nothing to solve this annoying and instructive problem windows is forcing on us.

Here are the articles and download link: What to do if Windows Update keeps turning itself back on What is Windows Update Medic Service (WaaSMedicSVC) and How to Disable It Program - Windows Update Blocker v1.7 (Free)

I hope this helps.

Just enable the option metered connection for the network adapter. It’s documented and works.

So simple, so elegant. Thanks DJ. I should have read this closer. I must have had the update issue mixed up with the virus checking.

It’s funny that Microsoft makes you pay to stop updates (windows pro allows stopping updates)

yet the free and lower cost windows (ie home) forces updates.

wouldn’t you think updates should be in the paid version and no updates for free version? Lol seems backward!

I agree. The whole forced update thing seems draconian. I understand setting updates to be enabled by default. However it shouldn't be forced on users that have a need to turn it off.

Getting back to my intention of this topic. I incorrectly remembered the tutorial saying that Windows Update will reenabled itself. However this was instead in the "Virus & Threat Protection Performance Improvement" section. So all my research about Updates reenabling it's self and work resetting things for this forced issue in my Win 10 was for nothing. Your fix in the tutorial to stop the updates is elegant. I thought this because after I went through and did all the performance tips windows was still updating on my SBC. I think I just missed this step.

What I remembered was totoral saying was:

Quote:

However, note that this service will occasionally turn itself back on - as we believe it is self-aware:).
So, how to fix Windows Defender from reenabling it's self? True to my abscessed nature I had to research this. What I found among a few other things is  If you turn of windows Defender off it will automatically turn back on to protect you're PC from malware and virus unless you have a third party antivirus installed. Also here are some other reasons. These are for win 11 but I've read that they apply to win 10 also:

Quote:

The Tamper Protection feature in Windows Security is active. You have recently installed a security update for Windows 11. You are running an expired version of a third-party antivirus program. Lack of antivirus program Windows Defender is the default anti-malware program Recent Microsoft updates (should not be a problem if updates are shut down)
Here's the articles I found this in: How to Fix Windows Defender When It Keeps Re-Enabling Itself on Windows 11 Why Does Windows Defender Keep Turning On? (How to Fix It)

The best way is still to delete or rename the program so windows can’t find it. It’s in that document

Outstanding. So many ways. It's good to know you have the best way. That's the way I did do it. I was confused because you said Defender will still turn itself on.
