I was wondering if it as possible to write programs with the SDK for use directly on an I phone, ipod etc or android device. so the device connects to the robot directly and doesn't use a pc at all
The SDK, no. It is dotnet, so Windows only. However, there is a library that can be used in Android, iOS, Raspberry Pi and Linux. https://code.google.com/p/ez-openbot/

excellent thank you. ill check it out now
how do you download the library?
Click on the source tab for svn instructions. On that tab, you can click the browse link and then navigate to the trunk directory to download the individual files and a sample.
Be sure to read the WiKi. There are not a lot of users of this library participating on this forum, so answers will be hard to come by (I have not used this, and in fact only learned yesterday that it could be used in iOS).
