Erne - Emotive Robot

deleted

Germany

So far I have not shown any of my projects here. This is changing now with ERNE the emotive robot.

ERNE was developed to observe the interaction of humans and robots. ERNE is an original project by Chris Wu. Thankfully he shared the 3d printing files for ERNE on Thingiverse.

The robot has ten micro servos for facial animation and two standard size servos for head movement. To control the robot I use an EZ Robot controller and camera.

At first people react skeptically and then start to play with ERNE. And although ERNE has no voice at the moment, many even talk to him!

For more information please visit Chris Wu`s website

You can find the Thingiverse project here

Chilonivm, ERNE is a great robot, that is very expressive, and fun to watch. Do you have any other plans for him? It would be awesome to have him react to Microsoft Cognitive emotions watching someone. Thank you for sharing. Steve S ;)

@Chilonivm:

Nice build, i like the mouth/ears concept.

If ERNE operates in public, I have to consider the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) here in Europe.

I presume you don't need to store the face pictures, is the issue related to third party cloud service (MSFT) ?

Hey there! This is a great build, I am also struggling to get my robot being emotionally responsive! It adds up so much flavor to a device, if it triggers the feeling of being emphatic! :)

I don't want to advertise 3rd party products here, but I guess the Google AIY Vision kit ist a very good option for offline emotion recognition...I just got one and can keep you updated of what it is capable of!

( Ist in Deutschland zur Zeit etwas teurer, denn es muss aus den USA bestellt werden!;) )

could you please share your software with us? and maybe a brief schematic?

Thanks!

Hi Moviemaker! Good to see you. How are you doing? Hope all is well. Are you building anything new or still working on the old one?

@Dave Hey, Dave. I have not built a robot in the last 12 months. I miss it with all of my heart. My wife forbids me to even talk about it. I am a little bit better. I have been to hell and back. I have heart trouble (6 way bypass), diebeties. Parkinsons, and Mel-Hiemers (joke). The main one that is giving me trouble is the Parkinson. I take medicine for it and when it works I do much better. But it is HELL when your body gets use to the dose. I am currently at 2500 mg. I got an Einstein robot. It is cool and also a NAO(I did not like it.) Finally the Pepper robots are here in the US. But, I have heard some bad things about them. Oh, my last robot is a CR10 cloan. I bought it in June and I haven't printed the first printout on it yet. It had some extrusion issues. and then Belt issues. Now it has a Z-Axis problem. I had the factory replace it four times. Then I just decided to repair what is not working. So, each time I order parts, it takes 60-90 days to come in. (china) One set of parts just did not come in all together. Why get parts Directly from the factory? Because the parts are ll proprietary and standard parts do not work. Lesson Learned. I thought I was going to die a while back. The doctors thought Lukemia. But got tested and I do not have it. Since I did not die as projected, I figured I would try to do another bot. But my wife is against it and my pocketbook is dry.

It would be nice if Tony would share his stl files with us. I would like to do another Omni-bot-2000. His designs are always so good.

@ Chilonivm, That sounds sooo good. Thank you so much! I would like to set my erne up with a smart chatbot like alexa and mount it on a body and make a complete robot out of it. And, it will have to have an EZB on it, of course.:) Wow! this little session has got me alive again even though it was just in my head. God Bless all of you, Mel :)

Hi Mel, thanks for the update. I think of you time to time and wonder how things are in your world. I had hoped they were better than what you describe but I guess that the fact that you have lived when expected to pass is actually pretty good. Seriously though, I'm sorry you are having such trying health issues. Getting old truly sucks. Hang in there old friend and keep your head up.

You're a talented robot builder with a keen mind for this stuff. Please find a way to keep creating life from metal and electricity. I hope your wife sees how important this path is to you and starts supporting your need to tinker and play. This kind of activity keeps our minds young and helps the body stay strong. If nothing else keep a conversation going with us here about your visions and questions. :)

@Dave,

Thanks Dave. God Bless You.

When I quit, (mandatory after I had a bad fall on top of my tools) I got rid of ALL of my stuff. I moved into another apartment Where I did not have a dedicated workshop. Now, it would be the kitchen table(sucks). I have no parts at all. I guess I could look at this like a fresh start.( I won't have my non-working parts mixed with my new parts that I would have to buy.)

My heart is really into it. But I will have to overcome some obstacles like wife, money.

I will give it serious thought.

@Chilonivm,

I really like your erne. I would like to have another build with erne's head and a body and a chatbox (Alexa or something like that.) You did a GREAT job on that!

Very cool robot, good job, I like the facial expressions.
